Automatically Tidy Up Threema Chats

As they say, a tidy house equals a tidy mind. Arguably, the same applies to the digital space, which is why the latest Threema versions for Android and iOS come with a handy little feature to tidy up your chats for you.

As of now, you can specify a time span after which old chat messages will be automatically deleted. This way, your chats remain tidy and are continuously cleared of old messages that would otherwise take up valuable disk space.

While it has been possible to free up disk space by deleting old messages for quite some time, it is no longer required to manually trigger the process thanks to this set-and-forget feature.

How to Set It Up

Of course, the default setting is still to never delete old messages. Here’s how to change that:

  • Android: Navigate to “⋮ > Settings > Media & Storage > Storage Management > Delete automatically”

  • iOS: Navigate to “Settings > Storage Management > Manage All Chats > Automatic Deletion”

  • Specify the time period after which messages will be automatically deleted: 1 year, 6 months, 3 months, 1 month, or 1 week

Messages in note groups, open polls, and starred messages on Android will not be automatically deleted. All other messages – including unread messages, voice messages, files, etc. – will be irrevocably deleted in due time, and you won’t have to manually free up space ever again.
