Starting today, Threema’s innovative new desktop app is available to all iOS users as a stable beta version that can be used as a daily driver.
The next generation of the desktop app was redesigned from the ground up, and it doesn’t just sport a completely refreshed and modern UI with a significantly faster response time, but it also offers multi-device support: even when your smartphone is turned off or not connected to the Internet, you’re able to chat from the computer.
Streamlined and clean UI: the contact and group details are now displayed in a separate pane next to the chat window.
When designing the innovative multi-device architecture, we paid particular attention to metadata restraint. That’s why the “mediator server,” which synchronizes messages between linked devices, is logically separated from the chat server: The chat server (which still forwards messages from one Threema ID to another) doesn’t know which Threema ID the messages stored on the mediator server belong to. The mediator server, in turn, doesn’t know the Threema ID of a device group. A detailed technical overview will be published at a later date.
Here’s how you use the new desktop app:
- Desktop: Download the current beta version of Threema for Desktop
- iOS device: Update your Threema app to version 5.5.3.
- Threema iOS app: Navigate to “Settings > Desktop/Web > Linked Device (Beta),” tap on “Add Device,” and follow the on-screen instructions
Threema 2.0 for desktop is beta software that is still being developed. Some features are not yet available, but will be continually added.
